Hi friends!
Continuing this monthly series I began in September, mainly because it’s kind of fun to look back and make a note of the things I really enjoyed or cherished in the previous 30 or so days. (And feels like a gratitude practice of sorts.)
So, here’s October!
Fav Eats:
At the beginning of the month, I went to Northern California to visit my best friend, and while I was there, her husband made homemade fried rice….. so, THAT. Yum. It was incredible.
I also loved this fall pasta, which features the true unsung hero of the season — butternut squash. (Note: I subbed spinach for the kale because…. well, kale is terrible.)
Fav Listen:
OK, I’m going to cheat this time… It’s not my favorite thing I listened to in October, but I was on a podcast! 🤓 Aka a thing you can listen to. I recorded it this month with the lovely folks at Food52 and it just dropped yesterday — you can listen to it here. It’s based off an essay I wrote for Food52 earlier this year about grief and my mom and her Italian cooking.
Fav Read:
One of my favorite culture writers, Anne Helen Petersen, had a great interview with media studies professor Samira Rajabi on ambiguous grief earlier this month, that is 100% worth your time. I also really liked this opinion piece from Lindsay Crouse on “OK culture" in the New York Times.
Fav Watch:
Ooooh. “The Maid” on Netflix, hands down. Excellent. I also watched HBO’s documentary “Four Hours at the Capitol,” and that was…….. eye-opening. Yikes. (I recommend watching though!)
Fav Thing Bought:
Hmm. I’ve been trying to spend less (and not doing so hot, if we’re being honest), but probably this jacket I picked up in preparation for a trip to New York (which is coming up very soon!). I thought I was going to hate it when I tried it on because of the high/low style (short in the front/longer in the back), but it’s surprisingly flattering on. Jury’s out on whether it’ll be warm enough but fingers crossed it holds up.
++++
What would be on your list of favorites for this month? Let me know in the comments, and I hope you have a great Halloween weekend! Please enjoy the heck out of your favorite candy. (Mine = peanut butter M&Ms, and Reese’s pumpkins.)
Thanks for reading!
